RTNA Statement
The following statement was issued by the Board of Directors of the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California in response to the civil awards announced by LA Superior Court on Friday, July 2, 2010, regarding suits brought by three Los Angeles-based broadcast journalists. The suits involved injuries sustained by the journalists during police actions in MacArthur Park on May 1, 2007:
"Regardless of the outcome of the individual cases, RTNA considers it critically important that what law enforcement and the public take from the May Day events is that the right of journalists to do their jobs, without interference from intimidation or violence, is vital to the public’s right to have access to news and the application of the First Amendment."
