RTNA Statement Regarding

LAPD Use of Force at Immigration Rally

May 2, 2007

The Radio & Television News Association of Southern California (RTNA) calls for an immediate and complete investigation of the violent treatment of journalists by Los Angeles Police Department personnel at the conclusion of Tuesday's immigration march. There is evidence that officers knocked reporters to the ground, used batons on photographers, and damaged cameras, possibly motivated by anger over journalists' photographing efforts by officers to control the movements of marchers.

If any journalists have information regarding this matter, including videotape of encounters between police and reporters, please notify Rick Terrell of RTNA at (562) 987-4545.

Excessive force is inexcusable regardless of the circumstances or the identity of the victims, but RTNA protests any effort by law enforcement personnel to prevent journalists, who are acting in the public interest to provide the entire community with a record of an important news event, from doing their jobs.

RTNA will be in contact with the Mayor’s office, the Police Commission and Chief Bratton’s office, to determine the status of the investigation of these incidents.
